WM4SG MOBILE OPERATIONS

While I don't travel much on business anymore, I still get a lot of opportunity for mobile operating. So far I have operated mobile in these 24 states.

Alabama - Arkansas - Delaware - Florida

Georgia - Illinois - Indiana - Iowa

Kansas - Kentucky - Louisiana - Maryland - Missouri

Mississippi - Nebraska - New Jersey - New York

North Carolina - Ohio - Pennsylvania - South Carolina

Tennessee - Virginia - West Virginia

Most of the mobile activity these days takes place in the trusty Land Cruiser. The HF antenna is a K4POZ Screwdriver mounted on a steel plate, tunable from inside the car.  The rig is a Kenwood TS-50S.

Often I operate in the "tri-state" corner area where Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina all meet. In the space of 800 feet I can cover all three states and if the nice old guy that lives on the corner is home, I can go park in his field and actually be in all three states at the same time.

The "Tri-State Corner" is kind of an interesting place. Some of the locals don't much like outsiders in the area and they are always suspicious (actually sounds a lot like the mountain area where I live). Once you tell them what you are doing they get a whole lot friendlier - although the fact that the movie Deliverance was filmed in this same area never quite leaves your mind (and they didn't need to look far for the extras).

By the way, an operating tip when mobile in the Georgia Capital. It almost always should be "mobile-in-motion" as it is usually not a good thing to park anywhere for long periods of time in Atlanta itself. It is best to provide a moving target, so to speak.

Those of you that have never been to Atlanta might not know that it is easy to move around as everyone drives at least 70 on the main highways.  Any speed much lower is likely to result in a ticket for impeding traffic.
