BEFORE WM4SG - - - - -
NØANQ OMAHA SHACK
Long before there was WM4SG in Georgia, there was NØANQ in Omaha, Nebraska.
Here are some pictures from long, long ago - late 70's to be exact.
 This
was my operating desk in Omaha. A friend of mine built it for me and did an
excellent job.
The radios at the desk level are
on a tilted shelf so it was easier to see the dials and labels.
This was the "computer corner" of the
operating desk with my first Heathkit H-89 all-in-one computer. Just imagine - 8
bit processor, 16KB of memory, 320KB floppy drive. How life has changed.
Yep, that would be me at the operating desk. About 25 years younger, but still the same
guy only with a LOT less gray hair. In the midst of all the Heathkit gear (which I built)
is my pride and joy at the time, a brand-new out-of-the-box Kenwood TS-820S. What a radio at the time.
Another thing that
had to be left behind when we moved was this equipment rack. In the center of it
you will see a large Collins R-390. Some of the other
stuff includes an old style TNC for radio-teletype and yes, that is a teletype machine sitting in the foreground.
And, yes, I did use the teletype machine. Back in those days there wasn't any computer
software available, until my friend Dick (KØDG) wrote one for the H-89.
Lots of rolls of paper, tape and oil kept it all going. And you know what, it was fun.
Before leaving Omaha, long before there was a
Sloane....
There was......
Her Daddy......

Sloane's Daddy at 14 Years...
